[current materials] Photoshop (v 6.0), obviously. And we are working with 'Uke Holden ', who was generously lent to us by Kelly of the Arcana online shounen ai manga.

1) Let's shade the background.

Don't worry about the folds in the cloth yet. Create a new layer on top of the background for the shadows we're about to create. Now select the character's shadow as it would appear on the cloth, carefully dragging the polygon lasso to match the character's body. You can be less precise around the head, but be cautious around the shirt's shadows, because there are no layers to cover your marks where the shirt is.

When you have that done, fill in the selected area with a very light blue. I'm using #D9DEF1.

Do the exact same process with his hand. The folds are very hard to explain.. sample with clothing of your own at home. Here is an example of some of the folds I spotted in this image..

2) Creative freedom rocks..

Here is my final version. ^^ I just used a light pink hue instead of white and blue.

Yay, we're finished!

As always, the best way to learn to shade is from experimentation and LOTS of practice.
