| How to Create a Airbrush-Style Drawing with Photoshop | |
| Step Three: Final Touches [current materials] Photoshop (v 6.0), obviously. And we are working with 'Rocker Caine', who was generously lent to us by Kelly of the Arcana online shounen ai manga.. ---------------------------- 1) Fix the Outline! Remember that semi-annoying step I made you guys go through with the channel-clearing outline thing? ^_^ NOW you are actually going to put it to use! Go to the Caine Outline layer. Select the paintbrush or airbrush, and make sure they're at 100% opacity. Now, around each part of the outline, color it the way it corresponds with the image, just darker. In the hair, color the outline a purplish. Around the flesh, go for a dark brown. Around the shirt, go for a hued green. See the difference below? Subtle, isn't it? :) It really makes the drawing more realistic.
See, that wasn't so hard!!! ^___^ 2) Add a background! Caine is awful lonely without a background to tie the image together. I'm going to attempt to make Caine look like he's on a stage, performing. :) Now it's time to divulge my background and filter secrets! Remember that if you don't like the background I'm using, feel free to make a totally different one. It's up to you! Click on the background layer, then select the 'Add a New Layer' icon. ^^;; I really don't like to touch the original background, just in case. It's much easier to toss out an extra layer you've added. Since I want him to seem to be on stage, I colored this layer entirely black.
Remember the original light source? He cant be in a completely black room. Grab a big ol' airbrush, and color the top right area a green that goes with his shirt. Simple, neh? Too simplistic, though. It doesn't look like it's *shining* down on him.
Add a layer of medium green between the light green and the black in the same layer. Leave that layer the way it is.
Create a new layer, and using the airbrush, create a brighter light source on top of the light green area.
Next, create another new layer and, using the polygon lasso tool, create streaks of white light coming down from that bright light. Go the Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur to blur up the streaks. Then turn that layer into an overlayed layer. Shiny, neh?
But that isn't enough. We need light shining on Caine, too. Make a copy of the layer by dragging it down to the 'Create a New Layer' icon, and drag the new layer to the first slot in the Layers Palette. Whoa, that's bright! Tone down the layer opacity to 80% . Too make it even more realistic, shift the light a little above the light from the other layer.
Ooh! Nice effect!!! We're almost done. Make ANOTHER copy of that top light layer, and hit the Lock Transparent pixels icon. Color the light beams a green this time. Set the Layer Filter to 'Color'.
Finally, go to File>Save As> Select JPEG from the scrolling list below, and call it Caine.jpg (or any name of your choice)
